Women's Legal Rights Seminar β Empowering Somali Women
A landmark seminar on women's legal rights was attended by 120 women from across Mogadishu, covering inheritance, divorce, property, and workplace rights.
On December 5, 2024, Somali Legal Hub hosted a landmark seminar on Women's Legal Rights, attended by 120 women from diverse backgrounds across Mogadishu β including professionals, homemakers, students, and community leaders.
The seminar addressed some of the most pressing legal issues facing Somali women today, with sessions covering inheritance rights under Somali law, legal protections in divorce proceedings, women's property ownership rights, workplace discrimination and harassment protections, and how to navigate the legal system when rights are violated.
Senior lawyers from SLH led each session, presenting legal information in accessible, plain language β avoiding complex legal jargon to ensure all participants could fully understand their rights.
A dedicated Q&A session allowed attendees to ask anonymous questions submitted in writing, ensuring that women felt comfortable raising sensitive personal situations. Our legal team answered over 60 questions during this session.
"Many of the women who attended today had never spoken to a lawyer in their life," noted one of the lead presenters. "Seeing the moment when a woman realizes she has legal rights she never knew about β that is why we do this work."
The seminar concluded with the distribution of a Women's Legal Rights Guide, published by SLH in both Somali and Arabic, which participants could take home and share with others. The guide is also available for free download from our website.
